Aim of experiment


To configure multiple VLANs in a single MANAGED switch

Here in this experiment, we are going to configure three VLANs with VLAN ID 10, 20 and 30 along with names SALES, HR, ENG., respectively. For details please refer the table 1, given below.

Concept Related to VLAN

Here in this section, we will discuss about the three important concept about the VLAN.


  1. 1. What is a VLAN?

  2. 2. Why do we required VLANs in an Enterprise LAN Set-up?

  3. 3. How the Shared ICT Infrastructure works using VLAN?




Steps for Configuring VLANS

To configure a VLAN the flowing steps are followed:


  • # Creating a VLAN with VLAN ID
  • # Providing a Name to the VLAN
  • # Assigning ports or interfaces to the respective VLAN
  • # Making the port as access or trunk port
  • # Providing an IP Address to VLAN
  • # Creating DHCP pool for individual VLAN (if required)
  • # Exempting IP Addresses for each DHCP Pool.

We will follow these steps in similar manner for configuring multiple VLAN in a switch or across a set of switches.





Equipment Required for the Experiment

To carry out this virtual experiment in the actual environment we require the following equipment:


  1. # Switch (1 Nos.)

  2. # Laptop or Desktop (1 No.)

  3. # Console Cable (1 No.) with Comm. to USB converter in case you are using a Laptop, or

  4. # Mini console cable with USB Connector.
