Curriculum development activities primarily relate to the followings:
Reviewing, revising and developing/modernizing existing curricula
Introducing flexibility through Multi Point Entry & Credit System (MPECS)
Preparing new curricula in engineering and non-engineering areas
Preparing new curricula in non-conventional and vocational courses to meet the socio-economic needs
of the region
Developing curricula owing to introduction of new courses as necessitated due to implementation
of World Bank Assisted Project for Strengthening of Technician Education in the States of the Eastern Region.
A scientific and systematic method is followed in development of curriculum. The process involves
identification of the functional areas under a vocation or a discipline and then making an analysis
of competencies in terms of Knowledge-Skill-Attitude requirements in each of the functional areas
determined on the basis of job analysis. From the analysis of K-S-A requirements, broad curriculum areas
are identified and from these areas, different subject boundaries are determined. Following a retrogressive
approach, the applied subjects are first identified and, for studying these, core subjects and basic subjects
are derived. The subjects are then put in a hierarchical order.
A horizontal and vertical structure of the curriculum is then prepared and weightage of the basic subjects,
the core subjects and the applied subjects is decided. For each of these subjects, the course content is
identified and the requirement of Lecture, Tutorial and Practical is arrived at, keeping in view the time
available and the difficulty level of the subjects. For each of these subjects, instructional objectives
are written to help teachers and students objectively teach / learn the subject. The curriculum further
includes the evaluation scheme and guidelines for formative and summative evaluation. Also included in
the curriculum are suggestive list of books, list of experiments for each subjects, list of tools and
equipment with broad specifications.
The Institute is presently developing competency based curriculum for National Vocational Education
Qualification & Certification Framework (NVEQCF) where the main focus is on the development of specific
competencies as the total outcome of learning, in preference to teaching a particular subject and evaluating
students against learning of the course contents. It has also developed methodologies for bringing in examination
reforms and preparation of item banks for the State Boards / Councils of Technical Education.
Learning resources development activities include promoting development
of multi-modal instructional resource materials to cater to individualized needs of learning.
A good number of learning materials in print and non-print forms including text books, manuals,
monographs, multimedia learning packages and educational video films have been and are being developed.
Besides, the Institute has also assisted the technical institutions of the Eastern Region in setting up
Learning Resource Utilization Centres (LRUCs) for effective use of all types of learning materials.
The Institute is also acting as a resource centre for educational video films telecast countrywide
through education satellite channel (Gyan Darshan).
The Institute undertakes Research Studies and Development Projects in engineering education, management and technology areas for generating new knowledge and to develop methods and strategies for solving the problems of the user system.
The focal areas of R & D are:
Research in advancement of Technology & Management
Action research for improvement of Classroom and Laboratory Instructions of technical institutions
Development of conceptual models and ideas for sharing with clients. Conduct of Tracer Studies
