Civil Engineering Department was started with the establishment
of the Institute in 1965 and has been playing a key role in transforming the vision of
the Institute in to reality. In the frontier of research activities, publications,
liaison with Industries and Universities, the department has taken a very positive
and active role for the last four decades. The department has a sanctioned manpower
strength of Faculty - 4 Nos. (2 Professors and 2 Assistant Professors),
Technical Supporting Staff - 2 Nos. and Group D Staff - 1 No.
The Department offers Short-term Training Programmes for Teachers and Technical Supporting
Staff of Engineering Colleges and Polytechnics as well as personnel from the industry.
The programmes are focused on updating of knowledge in content and development of laboratory
skill in different areas of specialization in Civil Engineering, including the emerging areas
of technology. The department has the tradition of associating experienced field engineers from
various Civil Engineering organizations and experts from reputed technical institutions as visiting
faculty members to the training programmes to make them effective and practice based. The faculty
members of the department, according to the culture of the Institute, are also involved in conducting
other types of training programmes offered by the Institute viz.,
"Educational Technology", "Educational Management" and "Professional Skill Development".
Apart from the normal activities the department is engaged in organizing Workshops
on specialized areas of Civil Engineering with the aim of bringing together Academics
and Practicing Engineers to exchange their views and experiences in the related areas.
Recently one such One day Workshop on Structural Concrete - IS:456-2000 and its Amendments
was held on 22nd July 2009. The workshop was intended to emphasis on the proper application of
Codal provisions and its Amendments of the latest IS Code on Concrete both at design and construction
level. Intimations were sent to different reputed Design and Construction Houses of Kolkata along with
the nearby Universities and Colleges for participation as registered delegates. The response was excellent
with a participation of about 50 participants both from the industry as well as from the academic field.
The faculty members of the department are often invited to act as external examiners for different
Masters and Doctoral level research projects as well as to deliver special lectures in different short
term courses
organized by Institutions of International repute like Jadavpur University, IIT, Kharagpur etc.
Consultancy Activities
The Civil Engineering Department has procured a number of sophisticated instruments from
India as well as from abroad in the field of health assessment of reinforced concrete
structures and renders consultancy services to the Industry. The department has already served
a number of organizations of repute both in the private as well as in the Govt. Sector.
The department has well equipped Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation
Engineering
laboratories and undertakes Research & Consultancy activities in these specialized areas.
The Civil Engineering Department has a number of renowned and widely used software for performing
analysis and design of civil engineering structures. The department offers training programmes for
imparting theoretical as well as practical
knowledge relating to these and renders consultancy services using these software.
Research Activities
Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India has sanctioned a research project entitled
"Development of modified water-cement ratio law for high performance concrete with fly ash" with
Dr. Santanu Bhanja as the Principal Investigator at a total cost of about 20 lakhs for a duration
of 3 years with effect from April 2008. For this project a Junior Research Fellow (Professional)
[Samaresh Pan, ME in Structural Engineering from JU in 2008] has been recruited in August 2008.
Sri Pan registered for PhD.
Under the guidance of Dr. Santanu Bhanja and is working on the research project.
Transfer of Technology
For a rapidly developing country like India the advancement in the technical knowhow should not
be confined to the classrooms and research laboratories but should percolate to the construction
workers/masons for the benefit of the nation. Our Department is keenly interested to devote
concerted efforts in this direction and is already working towards transfer of skill and technology
to the construction workers/masons. The training has to be conducted in local language and hence the
entire medium of instruction like lectures, handouts and laboratory works has to be in the local language,
which is a Herculean task. Recently a number of workshops were organized by the Department along with a
leading cement manufacturer for technology transfer to masons of rural areas. The training included apart
from lectures hands on sessions in our concrete laboratory on good concreting practices and question answer
sessions. About 150 (one hundred fifty) persons were trained on three such training programmes.
The training was very satisfactory as observed from the feedback of the participants and their interactions.
The Department is housed in the new building of the Institute and has two
(2) air-conditioned modern classrooms, four (4) laboratories and individual faculty rooms.
The Department has the following Laboratories
Computational Laboratory equipped with Civil Engineering Analysis & Design Software like STAAD.Pro, STRUDS, RISA, ETABS, Auto CAD etc.
The laboratories are fully equipped to perform standard laboratory and in-situ testing in the respective fields. In addition the laboratories
provide the following modern, sophisticated facilities:
Test Bed (4 m x 13 m size) along with a 8 ton capacity gantry, which can be utilized for testing of one, two or three-dimensional structures and models.
Non-destructive testing equipment viz., Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Concrete Tester, Concrete Test Hammer, user programmable Digital Test Hammer, Half Cell Potential Tester, digital Compressometer for online measurement of load-deformation characteristics of concrete specimens. Rebar Locator, Resistivity Meter, Digital Deflectometer.
Equipment for assessment of Health of RC Structures by semi-destructive testing such as Concrete Core Cutting Apparatus, Pull Off Tester.
Computational Laboratory equipped with Civil Engineering Analysis & Design Software like STAAD.Pro, STRUDS, RISA, ETABS, Auto CAD etc.
